How
to Survive a Building Collapse
In the event a building you are in collapses, there are several things you can do to give you the best chance of survival.
If There is a Threat of Collapse
- Follow all directions issued by officials.
- Exit the building as soon as possible.
- Do not use elevators.
- Check for fire and other hazards. Check doors for heat before opening
them.
- Take your emergency supply kit.
- If you can't leave, take shelter under a desk, sturdy table, or other shielding object or furniture.
If the Building is on Fire
- Exit the building immediately.
- Crawl low to the ground if there is smoke.
- Use a wet cloth to cover your nose and mouth (if possible).
- Use the back of your hand to feel the upper, lower, and middle parts
of all doors.
- Do not open a hot door. Look for another exit.
- If you catch fire, drop and roll to put it out.
- Assist others (if possible).
- Never go back into a burning building.
If You are Trapped Under Debris
- If possible, use a flashlight or whistle to signal to rescuers.
- Avoid unnecessary movement that triggers dust.
- Cover your nose and mouth with dense cotton fabric to filter your
air.
- Tap on a pipe or wall to signal rescuers.
- Shout for help only as a last resort to minimize inhaling potentially harmful dust.
