Protect Yourself from Explosions

Life-threatening explosions could happen for a variety of reasons, including a terrorist attack. How you react in the seconds and minutes after these events can help save your life.

If There is an Explosion

  1. Exit the building as soon as possible.

  2. Do not use elevators.

  3. Check for fire and other hazards. Check doors for heat before opening them.

  4. Take your emergency supply kit.

  5. If you can't leave, take shelter under a desk, sturdy table, or other shielding object or furniture.

If There is a Fire

  1. Exit the building immediately.

  2. Crawl low to the ground if there is smoke.

  3. Use a wet cloth to cover your nose and mouth (if possible).

  4. Use the back of your hand to feel the upper lower and middle parts of all doors.

  5. Do not open a hot door. Look for another exit.

  6. If you catch fire, drop and roll to put it out.

  7. If you are at home, go to your family's meeting place.

  8. Account for family members and supervise small children.

  9. Never go back into a burning building or residence.

If You Get Trapped in Debris

  1. Do not light a match.

  2. If possible, use a flashlight or whistle to signal to rescuers.

  3. Avoid unnecessary movement that triggers dust.

  4. Cover your nose and mouth with dense cotton fabric to filter your air.

  5. Tap on a pipe or wall to signal rescuers.

  6. Shout for help only as a last resort to minimize inhaling potentially harmful dust.
