How to Survive a Dust Storm
Dust storms are unexpected and unpredictable and can sweep across Arizona's desert landscape at any time. You can easily survive one of these brief but powerful windstorms if you know how to react in advance.
Prepare to Protect Your Family
When a dust storm hits, there are several things you can do to protect your family:- If you are outside:
- Seek shelter immediately (if possible).
- Cover your eyes, nose, and mouth.
- Stay low and cover up.
- If you are in a moving vehicle:
- Pull off the roadway (if possible) or reduce speed.
- Turn off all car lights.
- Set the emergency brake (make sure the brake light is off).
