Be Prepared To Stay
Every Arizonan should have supplies on hand in order to survive for at least three days in an emergency. Here are some useful items that every emergency kit needs.Look at these ideas. You may want to change them based on the needs of your family and your area. Keep one at home and one smaller portable kit at the workplace, in your car, or another place you spend time.
Basic Items for Your Home Emergency Kit
- Water (1 gallon per person per day for 3 days minimum) for drinking
and personal care
- Food (a 3-day supply) of non-perishable food
- Radio and extra batteries or a hand crank radio
- Weather radio (NOAA version with tone alert)
- Flashlight and extra batteries or a hand crank flashlight
- Dust mask to filter contaminated air
- Plastic sheeting and duct tape to shelter-in-place
- Moist towelettes (wipes), garbage bags and plastic ties for personal
care
- Wrench and/or pliers to turn off utilities
- Can opener (manual) for food
- Eating utensils (knives, forks, spoons)
- Local maps
- The Emergency Financial First Aid Kit
Consider Adding These Supplies to Your Emergency Kit:
- Baby items like food, clothing, diapers, wipes, medicines, etc.
(if needed)
- Prescription medications
- Extra eyeglasses
- Pet food and extra water for your pet
- Important family documents (copies of documents in a waterproof
container)
- Insurance polic
- Identification
- Bank records

- Small bills or traveler's checks and change
- First aid book or info from www.ready.gov
- Sleeping bags or warm blankets for each person (more for cold weather
climates)
- Change of clothing (long pants and sleeves; more for cold weather
climates)
- Household liquid bleach to kill microorganisms (no scents, color
safe or added cleaners). Use only regular household liquid bleach
that contains 5.25 percent sodium hypochlorite.
- 9 parts water to 1 part bleach = disinfectant
- 16 drops of bleach to 1 gallon water = treatment for
drinking water
- Fire extinguisher
- Matches (in waterproof container)
- Mess kits, paper cups, plates and plastic utensils, paper towels
- Paper and pencil
- Books, games, puzzles, or other activities for the kids
